An esthetician is a licensed skin care specialist focused on improving and maintaining the health and appearance of the skin through cosmetic treatments. While not medical doctors, estheticians are highly trained in a variety of non-invasive cosmetic procedures.

Beginning January 1, 2026, Utah will discontinue the Basic Esthetician License. All new esthetics students will enroll in the Master Esthetician Program, which offers a broader, more advanced scope of education and career opportunity.

Master Estheticians in Utah receive comprehensive training in both foundational and advanced skincare techniques — including facials, waxing, makeup application, body treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, hydradermabrasion, dermaplaning, microcurrent therapy, laser hair removal, and phototherapy.

This comprehensive education prepares graduates to confidently perform advanced procedures and excel in professional settings such as spas, medspas, dermatology clinics, and other medical-aesthetic facilities. PIA Institute’s comprehensive Master Esthetician programs in Utah includes specialized instruction, certification, and state licensure. In addition to their technical expertise, PIA students learn and develop communication skills to effectively advise clients, understand their skincare goals, and recommend personalized treatments and products.

The terms “aesthetician” and “esthetician” often cause confusion because they’re used so interchangeably. While both refer to licensed skincare specialists, there can be a subtle difference in common usage, though this often varies by region, state regulations, and even the specific workplace.

Here’s how we typically understand the distinction:

Esthetician: This is the most common term in the United States, usually referring to skincare professionals who work in spa, salon, or wellness settings. Their focus is on cosmetic treatments designed to improve skin appearance, promote relaxation, and maintain overall skin health. Services often include facials, skin analysis, waxing, body treatments, and makeup application.

Aesthetician: While it’s sometimes just an alternative spelling, “aesthetician” can imply a role in a more clinical or medical environment, such as a dermatologist’s office, plastic surgery clinic, or medical spa. These professionals might perform more advanced procedures, often working alongside medical doctors, to address specific skin conditions or issues related to medical treatments (like advanced chemical peels, microneedling, or laser treatments). They might be called “medical aestheticians.”

In short: The primary difference often comes down to the setting and the types of procedures performed. An esthetician typically focuses on cosmetic services in a spa, while an aesthetician might perform more medically-oriented procedures in a clinical setting.

It’s important to remember that many states don’t legally distinguish between the two titles. However, licenses like Utah’s “Master Esthetician” bridge this gap, allowing professionals to perform a wider range of services, blending cosmetic and advanced treatments.

Ultimately, both titles represent dedicated, licensed skincare professionals committed to helping clients achieve healthy, beautiful skin.
